CRESS Grid Access Charges Highlight the Importance of Regulatory Certainty for Renewable Energy Investment

The reported revision of Malaysia’s Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS) grid access charge from 14 sen to 18 sen/kWh, shortly after an earlier reduction, highlights the importance of regulatory predictability in renewable energy investment decisions. Beyond the immediate cost implications, frequent changes can affect investor confidence, particularly where businesses must assess long-term financial commitments, projected returns and operational risks.

While ensuring the financial sustainability of the national grid remains essential, a transparent and predictable regulatory framework is equally important to encourage renewable energy participation. Clear guidance on how grid access charges are determined, how future adjustments will be implemented and their implications for existing and future commitments can help businesses make more informed investment decisions.

At SimpliSolar, we believe Malaysia’s energy transition requires not only commercially viable renewable energy solutions, but also a stable and transparent investment environment that enables businesses to translate clean energy ambitions into practical, long-term projects.
